about

E
E explores how we use our ready minds. And subsequent action we may or may not take from it. Early on in writing this song I experimented and took liberties with certain lyrical phrasing [E-A-S-T]. What surfaced ended up becoming a framework that helped crystallize my thoughts for what I was trying to achieve. What I discovered was an interest in exploring various types of warfare that manifests when individuals face adversity and inevitably, to some degree, run astray from love, peace, and acceptance.

E is rhetoric that came to mind when considering the warfare that can transgress in the mind and in massive militaristic terrain in the flesh. As you know, much of these tales of mind and flesh are completely fabricated. Still, what happens is essentially a distorted outpouring of the discourse incited within individuals that is then perpetuated among an equally distorted community.

This warfare or violence may take place in isolation between one and few, or as history and present day depicts, it perpetuates en masse, often in the East and cross culturally. Since I began releasing this album I overheard a Bible study group in a café comment that more people have died in the name of Christ [insert your Allah] than ever before this last year. In this same café I picked up a series of books by Joyce Meyer, a female pastor. This series led me to her book called, Battlefield of the Mind. Her book is essentially a forceful Bible study centered on how poor experiences in our lives and negative thinking, if not combated, will destroy our minds and the lives of those around us. No lie. An onslaught of negativity leads to all sorts of slaughter.

Indeed, the song is dense and the lyrics heavy. It intersects two discourses, of mind warfare and actual warfare. There is an overt militaristic quality meant to act as a sonic frontline. Big props to Jon who understood the energy of this track to the fullest and translated my percussive ideas to the ultimate level in tom, snare and metallic hits.

As you get through this mess of sound, ultimately you hear the final request of the narrative, which asks God for emancipation. It asks for emancipation from the noise of our minds and from the continuing global warfare and actual abuse and loss of life. God, please save us from ourselves.

lyrics

E

E-mancipate me from
A-nticipating every
S-ojourn
T-ale not happening

E-xcavate me from my own
A-rtillery
S-ave me from
T-aking all that’s left for me

Left, left, left right left...
Call and I’ll respond
Too soon we all fall down

Left, left, left right left...
Infantry in desert beige
Pixelated future prey
Left, left, left right left...

Ante up ante up
Put ‘em up now march
Ante up ante up
But this march is for what charge
Can you tell me, frankly
The call of the tale not happening
And convince me, you authority
So hey, your call
It’s not so powerful
Call the spade a spade
Emancipate

Left, left, left right left…
Big guns and bayonets
Seek differences in flesh

Oh I’m not afraid
That stuff’s so far away
And I’m not so phased
Not from so far away
But it’s a shame
And who knows who’s to blame
Should I be scared
(Is it my same fears)

Left, left, left right left...
Covert in mutual fear
Fear death is their next rest
Left, left, left right left...

E-mancipate us from
A-nticipating every
S-ojourn
T-ale not happening

E-xcavate us from our own
A-rtillery
S-ave us from
T-aking all that’s left for us

Ease the longing
Still the fury
All’s responding
In such fear and worry

Save us from ourselves
