about

N

N is about relationship with one’s light. About our individual God given light that we’re asked to illuminate on our path here on Earth. We all have dreams and aspirations and ultimately a quiet voice within meant to guide us toward our purpose, and through this complex journey of life. There are endless matters of flesh that can distract us from our light, or cause it to look small or dim from our view.

Inevitably we each experience great joy, sorrow, and the in between, which in their own way cause reckoning with our perception of what it means to be here. We may work hard for, or seem naturally headed in one direction when suddenly life sets us on a much different course. Our discourse for who we are and what we are meant for can fall awry. Or that steady path we are on slows to such stagnancy that we doubt our ability to manifest what we feel so strongly is our purpose in life. Or we observe the craziness that perpetuates in circles great and small around us, and it becomes our focus and we lose sense of the beauty and generosity the world offers. This can take us to some dark places in how we perceive life and our circumstances as well as what we reach in our internal landscape. Even still, our light shines brightly as ever.

Such experiences in life test, and hopefully build our faith. They act as requests to start or to continue leaning on God in discussion and in relationship, versus indulging in the haze. Life can get that difficult to show us that this is the only way we can become, or remain aware of how bright our light shines and that we are capable of overcoming and staying course. I doubt, I’ve dodged; yet I still strive to rest in this truth in a consistent way and experience the peace that it brings. It’s a peace in oneself that has a ripple effect on those around you. Most often the ones we love are most affected so for the most selfless of the bunch, motivation can be held most for them.

This is another song featuring Native American flute. As I was tracking demos in my apartment in late 2014, I couldn’t get away from hearing its primal wail in several of these songs. Thanks to my dear friend, Deborah who lent me one without hesitation in my frantic in the moment search. The original flute demos I did are in these final recordings. Many thanks as well and again to my dear friend and collaborator, Jon, who basically outsmarts on marimba and metallic percussion. To me it’s the perfect tricky backdrop to the dual chorus, a melodic plea over a rest assured MC conversation with the light. And there along with all the vibes that carry this album, you have N. Good vibes to you all, thanks.

lyrics

N

True...
North, Etoile du Nord…

So Polaris
Shall I trust that
What’s inside of me here
Is what shines there
Etoile du Nord

So Polaris
I’ll continue
Pull from me
What I see shines out there
Etoile du Nord

I, I want to be..I, I want to feel
I, I want to be..I, I want to feel
I, I want to be..I want to feel
I want to be..
Who You see

Your light distinct often succumbs to fog
The manic haze of life’s sirens call
No fault of yours it’s inevitable
Tie me to the mast, you’ll see what’s vulnerable
I’ll writhe enslaved by sly beauty’s cave
Troll through the fog nearly for too long
Hope flickers, faith wanes, finally I wake
To the shock of those great big motherfucking rocks
There to sink me deep, there to deceive
The guide, your light that’s charting me
This grand display, discourse with the haze
Time’s up for now, how I passed it, well
Your cast so serene gives me more to believe
Than allure, escape, you know, the death of me
I’ll stay the course as shit rocks this boat
There to disclose what I need to know

Looks so small
From here
No needle can aim
Where my needle aims
