W

Lyrics function in the mind’s eye, perhaps later shared with someone close, a trusted partner, or merely with the shoulder stood next to the given visionary. W is a humble reflection that plays out just a glimpse of the massive variation of visions beheld for the west, whatever that west is from one’s standpoint in place and time. No doubt many of us reading this have fulfilled, are living out, or ponder our own dreams of the west. Some wonder why it’s such a fascination. Still, we are so close to this land’s brutal history. Genocide for the sake of gold, oh, and for the generations to come. Fast not-much-forward to the rose colored possibilities before us, and for those who may be seeking a change, growth, a different sort of expansion. For we are not to blame, right, and how can we not feel blessed? Still what is it, with all the shadows. Couldn’t those shadows have remained light in a future we all shared? And what would that future, our now, be like? We will never know. We do know, and for some as an awareness more faint to some than others, a history of Black chains and Native wails. Of life, industry and hope as well, yes, and our world as it is to us now... The shadows will forever be and we have liberty.

lyrics

W

Lo, lo and behold...
The wild wild west

Feel it calling
You want me, I’m on your mark
Lo, all the mountains
Lo, gold, all this land
Into your windstorms
I’ll make you shadows

To our new land
We ride
Lo and behold
Dust is warm

And so it goes
All got a destiny
Let’s manifest
In the wild wild west
Lo, lo behold
This dust is still warm

Aye,
We all got a destiny
So lo, let’s go and manifest
This land is ours to claim
So let’s ride our horses til the sun does set

What’s theirs is ours
So we’ll cause a war
Yes, 1812

What’s theirs is ours
So let’s cause a war
We won’t make a mess

Tell our sons and daughters
Lo, it’s all for you
‘Cept this Lawlessness

Motor cars we’ll ride ‘em through
Making big ‘ole plans for it’s ours to choose

Them kids, all years from now
They’ll hike it west as the sun sets
Them kids with their big ole dreams
Their big ole dreams with no consequence

Navigate through shadows
And bright surprise, grand meadows
There they’ll lay their arms up, watching the moon rise and the stars above
And waste away the hours and tell their friends all the stories that they like to hear
My mama says make the most of that mess, do what’s best for you and go west

[Lo...
Behold hold...
The West...
Gold...
This land...
So when...
And how...
With whom...
For what...
Manifest this destiny
Manifest destiny manifest destiny manifest destiny
Can’t see see...
Far enough far enough
Enough is enough
Must navigate navigate navigate…]
